Beginner Blogging

Ok… I am brand new to blogging, and bloggsites. The first few were difficult, or at least time consuming, mostly because i was unfamiliar navigating through the moveable type system. I definitely haven’t mastered anything, but am becoming more comfortable every time I log in. As far as other technical aspects go, I am not sure how the tags and keywords work, wether they should be separated by commas, or even how specific or broad they should be. I guess it depends what they are used for.

As far as the writing goes, i have been writing my whole life. Blogging is little different. When I am writing a story or a poem, i am writing and then coming back to it several times. I can make corrections or bring in new ideas. The blogs are quick and dirty. Speaking of dirty, i never thought about writing for an audience. So, I never thought about tuning anything down. Also, it’s strange because i have no idea if there is an audience. If there is, what are they interested in hearing about? Will they enjoy the same random nonsense i do?
That’s about it. I like it so far, and I’m sure as i get more comfortable with it, it will become more natural and less forced.

I'm finally getting around to reading the latest batch of posts you've done. No doubt in my mind, you've figured it out.

The way I see blogs is that they don't need the volume of traditional media to reach any sort of critical mass. With print media, you need some serious investment to make sure that tens of thousands if not hundreds of thousands of people are going to consume it.

With a blog, you can jot something down and make it accessible to hundreds of millions of people in the amount of time it takes to do the jotting. It might be interesting to a couple people, a couple hundred, or a couple hundred thousand. Who knows? Does it really even matter?

I have some suggestions for you too, but I can't find them at the moment!

ok...sounds right..

Found my notes for you:

The post about the floor refinishing was awesome! It had many good components: pictures, specialized information, and your unique experience / perspective.

The post about Brian Downey first got me worried because of copyright infringement issues, but then I figured you might know the artist, and since you clearly attributed his work, he probably appreciates the exposure. Along those lines, you might want to see if he has a website and link to it.

All the other posts are good, too. As some general advice:

* Proof read your posts and check for spelling / grammar errors
* Use lots of pictures
* Use paragraphs, and italicize / embolden an important word here and there
* Choose categories broadly, tags generally, and keywords specifically.

I'm not sure if MTOS lets you create categories, but I'm pretty sure it lets you pick tags and keywords after the text area.
